“The trouble is in the mind, for the body is only the house for the mind to dwell in, and we put a value on it according to its worth. Therefore if your mind has been deceived by some invisible enemy into a belief, you have put it into the form of a disease, with or without your knowledge.” -Phineas Quimby
You have a dream to create something wonderful, but you haven’t been able to get it off the ground. For whatever reason, you can’t get yourself to take that first step. Perhaps it’s the fear of failure, or maybe the whole process just seems too daunting. The finished product can feel like such a long way off that it seems hard to imagine ever completing. So you give up before you begin, never really knowing if you could have done it.
If this absolutely frustrates the shit out of you, I’ve got good news – it doesn’t have to be this way. You have everything you need to achieve your goal – all you need to do is to learn how to filter out all the useless noise that your mind takes in to be able to focus on what’s relevant. With a little bit of fine tuning, you can train your mind to do this.
The Reticular Activating System
The mind is like a sponge that gathers information from everything we are exposed to, and if it were all to be taken in by the conscious mind, we would become completely overwhelmed. Fortunately, we have filters that allow us to process only the sensory impressions that we feel are most important. This process is controlled by what’s known as the reticular activating system in the brain.
The key question here is what do you see as being important? In other words, where do you focus your attention? Depending on where your attention is focused, other things are going to be missed by the conscious mind.
“Life is a mirror and will reflect back to the thinker what he thinks into it” – Ernest Holmes
You see, you create your own reality with your thoughts, actions, feelings, beliefs, values, goals and dreams. And when used wisely, these allow you to accomplish any task that you set your mind to (or conversely, can hold you back from accomplishing your dreams).
By setting an intention to take control of the way you think, you open the doors to success. You come to realize that opportunities you once thought were out of reach were actually being blocked by your own self-limiting beliefs.
Step 1: It All Begins with Focus
Have you ever noticed that when you’re on the lookout for something, you start to see it everywhere? For instance, I remember taking a drive upstate, and I noticed a star on a house…then another one….soon I was looking for stars everywhere, and then I saw them on about 9 out of 10 houses! Then I started seeing them on other types of buildings too, not just houses.
Our minds produce the outcome of what we focus on. And with practice, you can train your mind to tune into whatever you chose, such as solutions to a particular problem. Let’s say that you really want to hire a social media expert for your business. But you don’t know any social media experts, and you don’t want to go through the hassle of posting an ad online and reviewing tons of applications and spending lots of time on interviews. So you put out your radars, and suddenly, you start to meet social media specialists at networking events. Or a friend makes an introduction to another friend who just happens to be a social media expert, and so on.
With a simple shift in focus, opportunities will start to present themselves. The key is to avoid negativity at all costs. Stop focusing on the negative and what’s not working, and instead, ask yourself “How can I accomplish this goal?”. With this simple question, you are programming your subconscious mind to look for the answer. So instead of having your mind focus on what’s not working (and creating more of it as a result), it will be focused on finding solutions, and you will start to see them appear!
Step 2: Reframing Your Language
By changing the language you use, you can fast-track your way to success. Eliminating the negativity and replacing it with something positive will help shatter the self-imposed limitations your mind created.
Instead of saying “I can’t do this” try saying, “I easily accomplish whatever I set my mind to.” You want to frame your statements in the present tense, positive.
Step 3: Never Give Up
There will always be obstacles, but don’t let them get in your way. Instead, try to see them as opportunities for growth. And if you stumble, just remember the definition of the word fail:
